Sodium chloride is indispensable to humans. The total amount of sodium ions in the adult body is about 60 g, of which 80% exists in Extracellular fluid, that is, in plasma and intercellular fluid. The chloride ion also mainly exists in Extracellular fluid. The physiological functions of sodium ion and chloride ion mainly include: (1) maintaining the Osmotic pressure of Extracellular fluid, (2) participating in the regulation of acid-base balance in the body, (3) chloride ion participating in the generation of gastric acid in the body, and in addition, sodium chloride also plays a role in maintaining the normal excitability of nerves and muscles.
